A shocking video from Bihar’s Saharsa has triggered outrage after stray dogs were allegedly seen feeding on preserved human viscera kept inside the postmortem room of the district’s modern sadar hospital, exposing serious lapses in the handling of sensitive forensic material.

The video, which has now gone viral on social media, shows dogs tearing into what officials said were preserved viscera samples linked to police investigations in suspicious death cases. The incident sparked panic within the hospital administration after the footage surfaced publicly.

FORENSIC SAMPLES MEANT FOR INVESTIGATION

Viscera samples are preserved during postmortem examinations in cases of suspicious or unnatural deaths. Doctors collect organs and tissue samples and seal them before they are sent to forensic science laboratories to determine the exact cause of death.

According to local reports, the samples seen in the viral video were stored inside the postmortem room of Saharsa’s sadar hospital, often referred to as the PMCH of the Kosi region.

The visuals have raised concerns over whether crucial forensic evidence connected to ongoing police investigations may have been compromised.

CIVIL SURGEON BLAMES POLICE DELAY

Reacting to the controversy, Saharsa Civil Surgeon Raj Narayan Prasad said recently collected viscera samples are immediately handed over to police stations, while the material seen in the room appeared to be several years old.

“Recent viscera is handed over to the police station. These are very old samples, several years old. Even then, we have now locked the room and action is being taken,” he said.

He also said the staff member responsible for maintenance of the area, identified as Yogesh Mahato, was being replaced.

When asked whether the incident could affect police investigations, Prasad shifted responsibility towards the police.

“It is the duty of the police to take the viscera for examination and later return the report to the concerned doctor,” he said.

In another remark that has drawn criticism, the civil surgeon claimed the dogs were “eating a chocolate box” kept in the room.

QUESTIONS OVER ACCOUNTABILITY

The incident has intensified scrutiny over safety protocols inside government hospitals and the handling of sensitive forensic material connected to criminal investigations.

Questions are now being raised over who was responsible for securing the postmortem room, how stray dogs managed to enter the facility, and whether any disciplinary action will follow after the viral footage embarrassed the health administration.
