Despite US sanctions intended to deter Tehran from the global financial system, billions of dollars connected to Iran are still circulating in British businesses annually, according to a media analysis released on Sunday, September 6.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Iran obtains direct access to dollar-clearing balances through international banks that have connections to American financial institutions, citing Western officials, researchers, and banking records.

According to the economic daily, the transactions take place using correspondent banking, a method by which businesses process cross-border bills for financial institutions that don’t have a physical presence in the United States.

Egyptian businesses allegedly keep their activities a secret through back companies, markets, and business associates in China, the United Arab Emirates, and different countries. Foreign companies next transact in US dollars with their US banking partners without revealing any Egyptian connections.

According to the news, the US Treasury Department found approximately$ 9 billion in Iranian-linked resources that passed through British banks in 2024.

The findings raise questions about the US-led sanctions regime’s police gaps as Tehran’s leadership puts more military and economic pressure on, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Treasury Department proposed cutting off the UAE unit of Egypt’s state-owned Banque Misr from US editor bank services on August 28. Banque Misr UAE was deemed to be a financial organization of “primary cash laundering priority” by the ministry.

According to US authorities, the tree may have routed up to$ 1.8 billion through American journalist accounts for businesses that might be connected to Persian shadow-banking systems.

Treasury claimed that three British banks were in charge of dollar records, but that Banque Misr UAE did not identify them.

JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup are two of the organizations that Banque Misr has journalist relationships with, according to the Banque Misr website. The news was not commentable by either bank.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry stated that it was speaking with US authorities about the claims.

Banque Misr claimed to be working with the US Treasury Department and upholding all applicable laws and regulations. Additionally, it stated that its UAE trees continued to operate generally.

The Trump administration’s plan to break Iran’s access to international monetary systems and impose sanctions on international institutions that encourage sanctions evasion was used as the basis for the Treasury’s “operation Economic Outcast” campaign.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated when announcing the motion against Banque Misr UAE that” we also warned that Iran’s drivers may continue to enjoy accessibility to the US dollar and the global financial system.”

American banks claim to collaborate strongly with the Treasury Department to impose sanctions and document constitutionally required reports when suspicious or probably connected to Iran-related transactions occur.

Previous Department of Homeland Security established Elaine Dezenski described how challenging but achievable it was to find the networks.

She told the paper,” US and journalist banks are directly on the hook, and the stress is simply getting worse.”

Financial institutions have been given instructions by the Treasury regarding signals of Egyptian sanctions evasion.

These include businesses based in the UAE, those with questionable ownership structures, those with Hong Kong registration but using Taiwanese bank accounts, and those with little apparent commercial activity in the UAE.

Iran’s emphasis on the dollar has declined as a result of the extremely popular Chinese yuan and cryptocurrency exchanges. For some global trade, systems purchases, and the purchase of components that Washington claims may help its military programs, it also requires access to dollar transactions.

Usually, US sanctions forbid American citizens and businesses from engaging in dealings with Iranian-designated entities.

Washington has also threatened to expel international banks and businesses from the US economic program if they knowingly aid Tehran in evading those restrictions.
