A baby girl has died after she was found unresponsive inside a Victorian home.
Emergency services performed CPR on the eight-month-old infant at a residence on Leith St in Redan, about 115km northwest of Melbourne, at 1pm on Sunday.
The child was rushed to a Ballarat Hospital, then was transferred to a Melbourne Hospital where she died on Tuesday.
Police interviewed a 23-year-old man, who was released pending further inquiries.
“The exact circumstances are yet to be determined and detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate,” a police spokesman said.
Homicide detectives are investigating the incident and urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
The ABC reported the baby had been living with foster parents but had been returned to her biological parents.
Child and Family Services chief executive Wendy Sturgess said the death had caused hurt in the community.
“It impacts everybody who has been involved with the baby,” she said.
“(It’s) absolute sadness and disappointment that we are here — it doesn’t even sum it up.
“It’s our job to keep children safe, especially babies.”
