An injured elephant calf was rescued from an open well in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district after villagers spotted the animal trapped inside.
The rescue brought together forest officials, firefighters and local residents in a coordinated effort to get the young calf to safety.
The three-year-old female calf is believed to have fallen into the half-filled well on Monday night while moving through the area with its herd. By Tuesday morning, residents of the village noticed the animal struggling inside the well and alerted the forest department.

Forest officials soon reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. A Rapid Response Team (RRT) from the Dhenkanal Forest Division was also deployed, along with personnel from the Dhenkanal Fire Division.
The operation involved carefully lifting the calf out of the well with the help of an earthmover. The calf was found injured and bleeding and appeared to be in a weak condition after spending hours trapped in the well.
Veterinary personnel provided primary treatment to the calf at the site following its rescue.
Once the animal was safely brought out, it was shifted to the Elephant Rescue Centre, where it will receive further treatment, care and observation.
The Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Dhenkanal shared details of the rescue operation on social media. In the post, the forest department credited its field staff, the Rapid Response Team, Fire Division personnel and villagers for their prompt response and coordination.

The incident also highlights the danger posed by abandoned open wells in areas frequented by wildlife. With elephants often moving through forest-fringe settlements in search of food and water, such unprotected structures can become deadly traps.
