Enzo Fernandez received a mixed reception from Chelsea supporters as he returned to Stamford Bridge during the club’s final pre-season game. The Argentine midfielder was booed by some fans but also backed by others as Chelsea beat Real Sociedad 3-1 on Saturday.
Fernandez came on for captain Reece James in the 62nd minute, just a day after Chelsea’s self-imposed deadline for resolving his future passed without a transfer. Manchester City had shown interest in the 25-year-old, but no bid was made to match Chelsea’s reported 120 million pounds valuation.

The reaction was clear from the moment Fernandez’s name was announced, with some supporters making their feelings known. When he eventually stepped onto the pitch, boos were met by chants of support from other sections of the stadium.
There was also a strong show of backing from his teammates. As James left the field, he handed the captain’s armband to Fernandez, his usual deputy, before embracing him. Fernandez’s touches were then greeted by a mixture of cheers and jeers.

Fernandez had made it clear earlier in the summer that he wanted to leave Chelsea, with Real Madrid initially interested before ending their pursuit. His representatives subsequently held talks with Manchester City, but the Premier League champions did not make an offer before Chelsea’s Friday deadline.
That has left Chelsea expecting to keep one of their most important midfielders, although the issue could remain unresolved until the transfer window closes on September 1.
The situation has also left some supporters unhappy, particularly after Fernandez’s public desire to move and comments from his representatives about his contract. Others appear ready to put the saga behind them and continue backing the Argentina international.
JOAO PEDRO LEADS CHELSEA WIN
The Fernandez controversy came despite an encouraging final pre-season outing for new manager Xabi Alonso.
Joao Pedro continued his excellent preparation for the new campaign with two goals, taking his pre-season tally to eight. Morgan Rogers also scored on his first appearance at Stamford Bridge, while Jon Aramburu got one back for Real Sociedad.
The victory gave Alonso a positive final test before Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign away to neighbours Fulham on August 24.
