Mangaluru: Dr Waheeda Sultana, a former professor of mass communication and journalism at Mangalore University and an eminent media academic, died due to a cardiac arrest in Mysuru on Thursday, August 6. She was 70.
Dr Sultana, who lived in Kalyanagiri, Mysuru, breathed her last at a private hospital after suffering a heart attack, family sources said. Her funeral will be held in Mysuru on Friday, August 7.
During her long academic career, she spent nearly 30 years teaching at Mangalore University and eventually retired as Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism. Besides her academic responsibilities, she served as Warden of the Women’s Hostel and coordinated Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) coaching programmes for minority and Other Backward Class (OBC) students.
Known for her scholarly contributions, Dr Sultana wrote extensively on media, women’s issues, health communication and emerging technologies. She presented research papers at several international conferences in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong and published widely in reputed academic journals.
She was particularly recognised for her work in corporate communication, health communication and women and media. She also served as the National Committee Vice-Director of the Asian Congress for Media and Communication.
Dr Sultana is survived by her husband, two brothers and three sisters.
Her passing has been widely mourned by former students, colleagues and members of the Mangalore University Mass Communication and Journalism Alumni Association, who remembered her as a dedicated academician, accomplished researcher and mentor who shaped the careers of generations of journalism students.
