Folks, after spending the whole day at a wet n’ wild Phillip Island for the Australian MotoGp, it’s a relief to look at the weather radar in Texas.
It is a balmy 26 degrees with sunshine and a slight chance of rain.
I’ll take that.
Kimi Antonelli has claimed pole position and is now within reach of becoming world champion.
Antonelli pipped Max Verstappen, winner of the past two races, to first spot on the grid by 0.179 seconds, with Isack Hadjar third.
We’ve got Charles Leclerc in fourth and Lewis Hamilton in fifth.
Hamilton is a five-time winner around the Circuit of the Americas. Australia’s Oscar Piastri and his McLaren teammate Lando Norris managed seventh and eighth respectively.
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli will start on pole position for a US Grand Prix that could make him Formula One’s youngest world champion, and Italy’s first since 1953, if results go his way on Sunday.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen joined the 20-year-old on the front row after Saturday’s qualifying at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas with teammate Isack Hadjar qualifying third and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completing the second row.
Antonelli has a 102-point lead in the championship over closest rival and teammate George Russell, who qualified only sixth, with 125 points still to be won after Sunday’s 56 lap race.
For Antonelli to win today, these three tings need to happen
- He needs to win
- George Russell (team-mate) finishes ninth or lower
- Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower (or below fourth).
