A video of a man tied to the wall of a culvert being brutally beaten up with sticks has gone viral. X users from Turkey shared this video and claimed that this was an Indian Muslim man being assaulted.

One such post noted in Turkish, “Humanity and justice are being trampled underfoot in India! Muslims are being beaten, mosques are being targeted. We call upon the world to rise up against this inhumane treatment! We will continue to raise our voices until justice is served and the oppression ends.”

Another alleged that “Hindu terrorists” were torturing a Muslim man because of his faith. Both X posts have been reshared more than three thousand times.

India Today Fact Check has found that the video is not from India, but from Bangladesh.

OUR PROBE

A reverse search of frames from the video led us to Facebook posts by Bangladeshi users. These posts, dated July 9 and 11, stated that the video was from Bangladesh.

A closer look at the video gave us a few more pieces of evidence to support that. The side wall of the culvert had Bangla words painted on it. They read, “Gulshan Academy School & College.”

A Google Maps search took us to the school located on Graveyard Road in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Further, the fence on the left side of the video featured an advertisement for admissions in the Tahmidul Quran Caded Madrasa. Keyword searches on Facebook suggested that a madrasa by the same name is located in Abdullah Bag, north of Dhaka city.

On the extreme left of the fence, a Bangladeshi contact number, 0175-5759396, belonging to another madrasa, was also featured.

We could not independently verify when and where exactly this happened. However, it is safe to conclude that this video is not from India.
