The family of Italy’s late star tenor Luciano Pavarotti has condemned the use of his voice in a video posted by a far-right politician.
Former general and leader of the far-right Futuro Nazionale party, Roberto Vannacci, had used the singer’s most famous song in his video.
They “never granted permission to use the voice, name, or identity of Luciano Pavarotti,” Italian media on Saturday quoted from a statement from the family of the opera singer, who died in 2007.
Vannacci had previously posted an apparently AI-generated video on social media in which the politician is surrounded by pistols pointed at him.
Pavarotti’s voice can be heard performing the aria Nessun dorma by Giacomo Puccini, accentuating the famous phrase “All’alba vincerò” (“At sunrise I will conquer”).
In the video, Vannacci responds to criticism and accusations against him and his party with the words “Me ne frego,” which roughly translates as “I couldn’t care less”.
He added to the video labels applied to him by critics, including “xenophobic,” “homophobic,” “sexist,” and “Moscow’s Trojan horse,” and responds with “See you at sunrise”.
Pavarotti’s family stated that they “strongly distance themselves from any association of his person with political messages, positions or initiatives.”
Vannacci gained popularity on the right with, among other things, statements against migrants and homosexuals. This year, he founded the Futuro Nazionale (National Future) party and is shaking up the political landscape.
His harsh rhetoric on migration and security resonates with the electorate of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing coalition. Recent polls have seen his party overtake the junior coalition partners Lega and Forza Italia.
