Mirzapur fans asked when the show would return. Then came another question: when was the movie coming? According to producer Farhan Akhtar, those questions played a key role in taking the popular franchise from streaming to the big screen.
Speaking at the trailer launch of Mirzapur: The Movie on Tuesday, Farhan said the film was largely a result of the audience’s continued demand. He recalled being asked about the show wherever he travelled after its first season premiered in 2018.

“The show is a result of fans’ love. They have supported the show from the time it was first released. Amazon took it across the world. Wherever I went, people used to ask me when Mirzapur was coming,” Farhan said.
He added that even after the film was announced, fans continued to ask about its release date.
“So it is really the fans that have demanded this movie. We are very happy and grateful to have put it together with the original cast and the amazing new cast,” he said.
How Mirzapur became a show
Farhan also had a humorous recollection of writer Puneet Krishna’s first pitch for Mirzapur. He said the idea initially caught the team off guard.
“When Puneet came to us for the first time, our first instinct was to refer him to a brain doctor,” Farhan said, laughing. “Then we thought of making it into a show so that people can get into it.”
He credited Krishna and director Gurmmeet Singh for building the world that eventually became Mirzapur.
“Guru and Puneet are the heroes of the show,” Farhan said, adding that Ritesh Sidhwani, Excel Entertainment and Amazon were happy to support them through the journey.
Mirzapur heads to theatres
After three seasons on Prime Video, the Mirzapur universe is now moving to cinemas with Mirzapur: The Movie. The trailer brings back some of the franchise’s most recognisable characters, including Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit and Munna Tripathi.

Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyendu and Rasika Dugal reprise their roles, while Jitendra Kumar joins the cast as Bablu Pandit, a character originally played by Vikrant Massey in the series.
The Gaddi remains at the centre of the new story, but the power game now has new players. The trailer introduces fresh contenders and takes the conflict beyond the familiar Purvanchal setting, with the story also moving into the deserts.
As old rivalries resurface and new claimants enter the race, the fight for control of Mirzapur is set to continue on a much bigger canvas.
For Farhan, however, the journey from streaming to theatres has a simple explanation: the fans kept asking for it.
