A series of developments were reported on Friday from across the region and beyond, including rising flood casualties in Nepal and Tibet, a dramatic tunnel rescue in Nepal, military operations in Pakistan, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s visit to the UK, and fresh Russian attacks in Ukraine.

In Nepal, the death toll from flash floods rose to 1,295 as more bodies were recovered from affected areas. The country also saw the rescue of two men from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project after they had been trapped for nine days. In Tibet, the death toll from last week’s flash flood in Gyirong county near the Nepal border rose to 31, with 531 people still missing.

Shortly after he was rescued, 30-year-old Sanjay Sah said, “I was chanting Hare Krishna,” bringing an extraordinary ordeal to an end on a day when millions were celebrating Krishna Janmashtami. He was among the two men pulled out alive from the tunnel in Nepal on Friday.

Elsewhere, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat began the UK leg of his overseas tour with visits to temples and a gurdwara in London, the organisation said.

In Pakistan, security forces killed 48 terrorists in multiple operations in the restive province of Balochistan, the army said on Friday.

In Ukraine, Russian attacks overnight killed at least three people, local officials said. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was expecting US envoys in Kyiv in the coming days as part of renewed diplomatic efforts to end the war.

Friday’s developments brought together reports of natural disasters, rescue efforts, political outreach and conflict, with Nepal and Tibet facing heavy flood losses, Pakistan reporting military action, Bhagwat beginning his UK visit, and Ukraine bracing for more diplomacy amid continued attacks.
