Around 200 students fell ill after eating food at the mess in Gujarat’s Anand district on Thursday night, triggering panic on the hostel premises. Several students reportedly developed vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain late at night.

Health department teams rushed to the Ranak Girls Hostel in Vallabh Vidyanagar after receiving information about the incident and began providing medical assistance. Thirteen students with more serious symptoms were admitted to a nearby hospital as a precaution. Doctors said their condition is now stable and they are out of danger.

PANEER, FRUIT SALAD ON THURSDAY’S MENU

According to Dr Ketki Seth, Officer on Special Duty at the hostel, around 200 of the 900 students living at the hostel were affected.

Speaking to Aaj Tak, Dr Seth said paneer curry and fruit salad were served in the mess on Thursday night. The paneer and milk used for the meal had been procured from outside.

“Samples of both paneer and milk have been sent to the FSL for testing. The exact cause of the food poisoning will be clear only after the report comes,” she said.

FOOD ARRANGEMENTS SHIFTED TO ANOTHER HOSTEL

Following the incident, the hostel administration took immediate precautionary measures. The existing mess cooks have been replaced temporarily, and food for the students is now being arranged through the mess of another hostel until the investigation is completed.

The administration said strict safety and hygiene protocols are being followed while serving food to the students.

WATER AND KITCHEN HYGIENE ALSO UNDER CHECK

Health department and local administration teams are also inspecting the hostel’s water supply and the cleanliness of its kitchen.

Authorities are examining food, water and hygiene conditions to determine whether the students fell ill because of contaminated food or due to another cause. The final reason will be established after the test reports and investigation are completed.
