Forrestania Resources has taken a major stride in its transition from explorer to producer, awarding a $27 million open pit mining contract for its Tycho gold project near Coolgardie in Western Australia to MEGA Resources. The contract award is a critical milestone and puts the company on a clear path towards its first gold pour.

The move comes against a backdrop of feverish activity in the Australian gold sector. With gold prices still stubbornly strong after hitting record highs earlier in the year, WA’s goldfields are a hotbed of corporate activity and consolidation. The buoyant market is keeping mining service providers busy, with contractors being locked in across the state as producers look to capitalise on the high-price environment.

MEGA Resources’ fleet of Cat 777 dump trucks may soon see service on Forrestania Resources Tycho open pit mining operation in WA.

The new contract covers a stage one open pit mining campaign at Tycho and includes drill and blast, mining, haulage and ore delivery services over an approximate seven-month duration. Forrestania says it selected MEGA after a competitive tender process, citing the contractor’s technical capability and operational approach as key factors.

The deal also includes a staged payment profile with some deferred arrangements in the early months, in a savvy commercial move that should help manage cash flow as operations ramp up.

‘MEGA demonstrated the experience, capability, and operational approach required to successfully execute the Tycho mining campaign.’

The award is a key pillar in Forrestania’s broader strategy to build a significant, multi-hub WA gold business. The company has been aggressively assembling a portfolio of assets across the state’s Southern Cross, Eastern Goldfields, and Forrestania regions. Management’s stated strategy is to develop two processing hubs at its recently acquired Edna May operation and the Lake Johnston facility, which is currently being refurbished.

Forrestania has been on a major growth run, recently completing a string of acquisitions and resource upgrades that have pushed its total gold inventory past the coveted one-million-ounce mark. This growing resource base is intended to feed its planned production centres, creating a scalable and diversified production profile.

Forrestania Resources executive chairman David Geraghty said: “MEGA demonstrated the experience, capability, and operational approach required to successfully execute the Tycho mining campaign. The award of the mining contract is a key step in Forrestania’s transition from project development into mining operations and supports the Company’s strategy as it advances toward first gold production.”

With the ink on its mining contract for Tycho now drying, Forrestania has fired the starting gun on its production ambitions. The move from paper studies and exploration drilling to mobilising heavy equipment on site is a significant de-risking event for any aspiring miner. As the blast rigs line up and first dirt begins to move at Tycho, the market will likely be watching closely to see how this emerging producer executes its plan to join the ranks of WA’s gold-pouring elite.
