One Dockers fan has gone to incredible lengths to spread the “purple joy” as Fremantle’s finals campaign gets underway in Perth this week.
Jo Milios has purchased 5000 purple headbands in honour of young gun Murphy Reid to hand out for free to other dedicated Dockers supporters ahead of Thursday night’s sold-out qualifying final against Hawthorn at Optus Stadium.
Milios, who hopes her beloved club will finally taste premiership success in 2026, initially bought a handful of headbands for her loved ones when a thought popped into her head.
“I ordered five for my family. Got this idea that perhaps if I looked into getting them en masse, I might get them cheaper,” she told The West Australian.
“I got them down to 45 cents. I ordered 2000 and even since, I’ve been giving them out at the games. I give them out for free.
“They all went and I’ve just bought another 3000 for the finals.”
Milios, who is behind the account @murphyreidmarch2september, said she reached out to the 20-year-old to get his approval.
And the All-Australian was more than happy to give her the green light.
“It is in honour of Murphy Reid. He doesn’t mind, I checked in with him,” she said.
“It’s all about, not making money, but everybody in Perth getting behind Freo.
“For 45 cents from me, just to be able to give that little gift and that little bit of kindness and joy, purple joy, to people, it’s just been a really nice community idea that I had and it has taken off.
“I’ll keep on buying more if we keep on going.”
The purple headbands could now rival the wizard hats in honour of Hawthorn star Nick Watson, who has inherited the nickname ‘The Wizard’.
And while purple headbands are set to trump the pointed peaks at the Dockers home game on Thursday night, Milios revealed it’s not locks of flowing brown hair like Reid’s that gravitate towards the accessory.
“People who love it the most are men with bald heads because they’re like, ‘I don’t have to wear a hat’,” she said.
