In a move that could reshape leadership in Indian healthcare, Dr. Devi Shetty has announced a unique initiative that puts nurses at the centre of hospital management, not just patient care.

The Chairman and Founder of Narayana Health said the group’s upcoming smart hospital in Banashankari, Bengaluru, will be managed operationally by nurses, with the aim of preparing them to become future hospital CEOs.

The announcement was made in a video shared by the hospital on its official social media pages.

‘WHY ISN’T A SINGLE PRIVATE HOSPITAL LED BY A NURSE?’

Addressing nurses directly, Dr. Shetty questioned why nurses, despite their expertise in managing patients and hospital workflows, have rarely been given leadership roles.

“Dear nurses, India has thousands of large private hospitals. But let me ask you one question. Why isn’t a single one of them led by a nurse as the CEO? Do you think Indian nurses lack the capability to run a hospital? Absolutely not. You’re an expert in managing the chaos every single day. The capability is there. But the system has never given you the runway. Today we are going to change all that,” he said.

Dr. Shetty announced that the Banashankari hospital will be India’s first “truly smart, paperless” healthcare facility designed to improve patient experience while delivering affordable care.

NURSES TO RUN HOSPITAL OPERATIONS

According to Dr. Shetty, the hospital will have a very different organisational structure.

“In this hospital, only those who actually touch the patient will work. There are no receptionists, no secretaries, no scribes, and no HR or finance department. You’re going to take care of the patient, along with the doctors and technicians. But the entire operational management and governance of this hospital is handled exclusively by you,” he said.

The hospital is looking to recruit 25 nurses who want to expand their careers beyond bedside care and develop management skills.

DUAL SALARIES AND AN IIM BANGALORE PROGRAMME

Selected nurses will continue to receive their regular clinical salary while also earning additional monthly management incentives.

“You will receive your standard clinical salary. And over and above that, you will receive substantial, I repeat, substantial, management incentives every month. You will effectively earn two salaries for your dual expertise,” Dr. Shetty said.

The selected candidates will also be enrolled in an executive hospital administration programme at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, with the entire cost sponsored by Narayana Health.

“We are not just hiring nurses for a new hospital. We are building the future leadership of global healthcare,” he added.

POSTS OPEN TO YOUNG NURSES

The opportunity is not limited to experienced nursing professionals.

Dr. Shetty said even nurses with just one or two years of experience after completing a BSc Nursing or GNM course are encouraged to apply.

“What matters most to us is your passion and drive, not just the years of experience. If you have the drive, the ambition, and the courage to step from the bedside into the boardroom, Banashankari is your launching pad,” he said.

CHANGING THE ROLE OF NURSES IN INDIA

In the caption accompanying the video, Narayana Health said the initiative aims to change the long-standing perception of nurses as caregivers alone by creating a pathway into executive leadership.

The hospital said it is looking for nurses who are ready to become future healthcare leaders.

If successful, the initiative could become one of the first structured attempts in India to prepare nurses for top leadership positions in hospital administrations, that have largely been occupied by doctors, administrators or management professionals.
