India’s defence production has touched an all-time high. According to data by the Department of Defence, production output increased from Rs 74,000 crore in FY17 to Rs 1.78 lakh crore in FY26. Defence exports grew even faster, increasing from Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 38,400 crore during the same period.

The rise in exports has outpaced production. While defence production increased by around 2.4 times since FY17, exports expanded by more than 25 times.

Defence Public Sector Undertakings and the private sector contributed 54.84 per cent and 45.16 per cent of total exports, respectively, in FY26. India exported defence equipment to more than 80 countries in the same time period.

Defence production touched a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore in FY26, while exports climbed to an all-time high of Rs 38,400 crore.

Despite the sharp rise in exports over the last decade, only a handful of products and destinations account for a large share. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, almost 53 per cent of India’s defence exports between 2014 and 2025 were naval vessels. Sensors, missiles and artillery systems contributed around 12 per cent, 11 per cent, and 10.9 per cent, respectively. Aircraft accounted for 8.3 per cent of exports in the same time period.

India’s defence exports were largely concentrated in its neighbourhood. South and Southeast Asian countries accounted for more than half of exports between 2014 and 2025, led by Myanmar (29 per cent), the Philippines (17 per cent), Sri Lanka (11 per cent), Vietnam (4.4 per cent), and Afghanistan (2.3 per cent). Armenia accounted for another 13 per cent of exports.
