Google’s Gemini has just reached a major milestone, surpassing 1 billion monthly active users. This makes Gemini one of the most widely used AI assistants globally, alongside OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced this achievement on X, and gave a teaser for what’s next right before the Pixel 11 launch.
On X, Sundar Pichai claimed that Gemini was the fastest Google product to achieve this feat. “1 billion plus people are now using the Gemini app every month to spark new ideas and get things done. It’s our fastest growing product ever, and our 14th to hit the 1B-user mark,” he wrote.

Pichai hinted that Google had more in store for Gemini. He added, “Thank you to everyone who has been on this journey with us – much more to come!”
Keep in mind that Google is expected to bring new Gemini features when it launches the Pixel 11 series on August 12 (early morning of August 13 in India). Going by rumours, Gemini may be integrated with the new Pixel Glow light on the back of the Pixel 11 Pro models.
Though Gemini is not the first AI assistant to cross a billion users. As per a report from Sensor Tower, ChatGPT reached this milestone in June this year.
Gemini reached 1 billion users much faster than Gmail or YouTube
Gemini as an app was first made available in early 2024. This means that Gemini took around two and a half years to reach 1 billion active monthly users. For context, YouTube, the biggest video platform today, took roughly 8 years to achieve this feat. On the other hand, Gmail took over a decade.
Keep in mind that the Gemini userbase mentioned here refers specifically to the Gemini app and did not include AI users from other Google channels, even as Google’s AI Mode in Search has separately crossed 1 billion monthly active users globally.
Though it is likely that Gemini integration with Google products, in particular, Android smartphones helped accelerate the adoption. Today, most Android phones come with Gemini as the default assistant, as well as features such as Gemini Live and Circle to Search.
In a blog post, Google gave details of how people were using Gemini in their everyday lives. The company said more than 63 per cent of users talk to Gemini out loud, while one in five Gemini Live interactions go beyond voice and use the camera or screen share. Gemini users also created around 150 million images a day.
While Gemini has achieved a major milestone, Google is facing mounting pressure in the AI race from the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic. The company recently saw some of its biggest names, including Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, leaving the company. Demis Hassabis has also stepped back from the day-to-day management of Google DeepMind.
At the same time, Google has reportedly delayed the release of Gemini 3.5 Pro as the model failed to meet internal goals for tasks like coding. Meanwhile, even companies like Meta and Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI have been releasing new AI coding tools.
