A man believed he would get away with murder after he murdered his ex-girlfriend’s husband before dumping his body in a river more than two decades ago, a court has been told.
A Supreme Court jury in May found Gofal Baziad guilty of murdering Jason Palmer in February 2004.
Prosecutors argued that Baziad killed Mr Palmer by hitting him on the head with a glass object and repeatedly stabbing him in his Lakemba apartment around February 6, 2004.
The man’s body was found in a sleeping bag weighed down with rocks in the Nepean River at Menangle about three weeks after he was reported missing by his wife, Renny Palmer.
The Crown prosecution argued that Mr Palmer was killed by Baziad in the fatal culmination of a “love triangle”.
Baziad was on Monday sentenced to 24 years behind bars with a non-parole period of 18 years.
“Until he was arrested in 2024 the offender genuinely believed that he had got away with murder,” Justice Phillip Boulten told the NSW District Court on Monday.
He called Baziad’s dumping of Mr Palmer’s body “plainly callous” while handing down his sentence.
