The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Wednesday imposed Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR after the capital’s air quality slipped into the ‘Poor’ category.
The directions apply to Delhi and NCR areas in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The sub-committee will continue to monitor air quality and forecasts before deciding on further action.
Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) rose to 244 at 2 pm on October 21 from 179, in the ‘Moderate’ category, a day earlier, according to the commission’s order.

Forecasts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) indicate that air quality is likely to remain poor over the coming days.
After reviewing pollution levels and weather forecasts, the CAQM’s GRAP sub-committee directed agencies across the National Capital Region to enforce Stage I measures with immediate effect.
It asked agencies to step up pollution-control measures and maintain strict vigilance to prevent further deterioration. Residents were urged to follow the citizen charter under Stage I.
