Green Day drummer Tre Cool has teased talks over an American Idiot movie.

The pop punk legends have hit the big screen with Nimrods: A Green Day Movie, which is a fictional coming of age music comedy inspired by the band’s early years touring the US, and the 53-year-old star is hopeful plans for an adaptation of their iconic 2004 album can now be revived.

He told NME: “I think it’s probably more talk now that Nimrods is such a hit. It’s great. We’ve shown that we can make records – and apparently we can make movies too.

“So, let’s do it. We make musicals. We can make Dookie… every morning!”

American Idiot was transformed into a Tony-winning musical, and in 2011 there were reports Tom Hanks was interested in producing a movie version.

The project was confirmed two years later, and in 2014, playwright Rolin Jones said he was “finishing up” the script.

HBO later gave the “green light” to start filming in 2016, but four years later Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, 54, revealed the movie had been “pretty much scrapped”.

However, Tre has suggested there is still hope.

Asked if American Idiot is well suited to the big screen, he teased: “Yeah, just got to do the right [thing]. Come on, we just put out Nimrods! You’re trying to make us make another movie!

“That’s like as soon as you put a new record out, two weeks later… ‘Oh you guys gonna go back in the studio?’

“Well, look, I’ll tell you this: we’re very proud of American Idiot, and it’s an incredibly important record to us – and we’re not not talking about it!”

Nimrods stars Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman and Ryan Foust as friends Tommy, Fred and Chad, who travel across the US from Kansas City to Los Angeles, believing that their band is opening for Green Day at a New Year’s Eve show.

There have also been offers of an official Green Day biopic one day, but the trio – completed by bassist Mike Dirnt, 54 – aren’t keen on that while they’re still active.

Tre said: “It happens every so often. Every couple of eras, someone’s like: ‘We should make a film about your life’. Like, we ain’t done yet.

“We don’t want to sit and look back and spin our wheels, spending our energy talking about what we’ve done when we’re still doing stuff.”
