A mobile shop owner in Gurugram was allegedly attacked with swords, his shop vandalised and costly items looted by a group of men after he objected to the molestation of a female family member, police said on Thursday.

The attack took place in the Badshahpur area on Thursday morning, just hours after the two main accused had allegedly escaped from police custody, officials said.

According to the police complaint filed by the victim, Jatin, who runs a mobile shop called Garg Communications, the trouble began late on Wednesday night when he was returning home with his family and friends after shopping. He alleged that two men in a Creta car began molesting a young woman travelling in his vehicle. When he objected, an argument broke out and he called the police control room.

A police team reached the spot, caught the accused and seized their car. However, the complainant alleged that while they were being taken to the police station, the accused forced the police officer out of the vehicle near the Badshahpur police station and fled after threatening him.

On Thursday morning, the accused allegedly returned with their associates and reached Jatin’s shop carrying swords. Police said the group entered the shop, smashed the glass counters and assaulted an employee, who was injured. The attackers also allegedly escaped with expensive mobile phones and gold chains. A police team later visited the spot and checked CCTV footage from the area, which showed the suspects moving towards the shop.

“Following the complaint, an FIR has been registered against the suspects and a probe is underway. The accused will be arrested soon,” Inspector Rajesh Kumar, SHO of Badshahpur police station, said. The case relates to an alleged molestation objection that was followed by an escape from custody and an attack on the complainant’s shop, police said.
