Two men have died and a 12-year-old girl is fighting for life after a horrific head-on crash involving a caravan near Shark Bay.
Major crash officers are trying to determine what caused the collision on North West Coastal Highway at Hamelin Pool, about 20km south of Overlander Roadhouse, about 11.30am on Monday.
Police revealed on Tuesday morning that the 60-year-old driver of a RAM ute towing a caravan and the 45-year-old driver of a Toyota LandCruiser ute died at the scene.
A 12-year-old girl and a woman in her 50s, who were passengers in the RAM, had critical injuries.
They were flown to Perth on an emergency Royal Flying Doctor Service flight on Monday afternoon, with the girl taken to Perth Children’s Hospital and the woman to Royal Perth Hospital.
Both patients are in a stable condition.
St John WA transported four injured people from the crash scene to Monkey Mia Airport before they were transferred to the RFDS jet, which landed at Jandakot Airport about 5.40pm.
Josh Osgood, who travelled past the scene just minutes after the crash, described the aftermath as devastating.
“The vehicles were in a million bits,” he told The West Australian.
“I saw the guys with a medical bag running over to help.
“I hope the kid pulls through.”
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services also responded to the crash.
The collision forced the closure of North West Coastal Highway for several hours.
Major crash officers are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash.
