Sometimes, the toughest battles are fought away from the spotlight. For Harshit Rana, the last few months were less about taking wickets and more about overcoming the frustration of watching from the sidelines.

One of India’s brightest fast-bowling prospects, the 24-year-old saw his rapid rise come to a halt after suffering a knee injury during India’s T20 World Cup warm-up match against South Africa.

The setback not only ruled him out of the T20 World Cup but also forced him to miss the entire IPL 2026 season, bringing his momentum to an abrupt halt. Rana underwent knee surgery and spent months in rehabilitation, leaving many wondering how quickly he would regain his rhythm.

But in Belfast on Friday, Harshit delivered the perfect response. Returning to India’s playing XI for the opening T20I against Ireland, the right-arm pacer produced career-best T20I figures of 3 for 24, even though the visitors eventually suffered a 34-run defeat.

His spell was a reminder of the qualities that had made him one of India’s most exciting young quicks before injury struck. Bowling with pace, extracting awkward bounce, and using his variations smartly, Harshit constantly troubled the Irish batters.

While the result did not go India’s way, his comeback performance offered India a major positive and reaffirmed that the young pacer is ready to make up for lost time.

HOW HARSHIT STORMED BACK

When India needed someone to wrest back control, Harshit Rana answered the call. The fast bowler produced a fiery spell, combining pace, bounce, and clever variations to derail Ireland’s innings. His incisive opening burst reduced the hosts to 36 for 3 in the Powerplay, putting India firmly in command.

Despite conceding two boundaries to Ross Adair at the start of his spell, Harshit hit back immediately by forcing the opener into a miscued pull. The thick top edge flew behind the wicket, where Sanju Samson completed a fine catch. In his second over, Harshit struck again, dismissing Tim Tector with a length delivery that extracted extra bounce. Tector failed to middle his lofted shot and offered a simple catch to Shreyas Iyer at mid-off.

Harshit continued to test the Irish batters throughout the innings, repeatedly beating the outside edge of Benjamin Calitz and Lorcan Tucker with deliveries that seamed and climbed awkwardly. He returned in the death overs to deliver the knockout blow, removing Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker for a well-made 50. Tucker picked the slower ball but could only find Tilak Varma at deep midwicket.

Harshit earned praise from skipper Shreyas Iyer after his outstanding spell.

“Harshit Rana bowled phenomenally well. Coming back from injury to perform at this level and showcase his talent is simply brilliant,” Shreyas said during the post-match presentation ceremony.

HARSHIT NEEDS SUPPORT

Harshit could hardly have done more in Belfast. Returning from a lengthy injury layoff, the pacer provided India with the early breakthroughs they desperately needed. Yet, his efforts went in vain as the rest of the attack and the batting unit failed to match his intensity.

After Ireland were reduced to 51 for 4, Gareth Delany’s counterattacking 49 revived the innings and shifted the momentum. Prasidh Krishna endured a difficult outing, conceding 57 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket. Washington Sundar leaked 19 runs in the only over he bowled, while Axar Patel proved expensive in his first two overs before redeeming himself by taking two wickets in the final over.

India’s batting fared no better. Apart from Abhishek Sharma’s explosive half-century and a brisk cameo from Shivam Dube, the visitors struggled throughout the chase and were bowled out for 148, handing Ireland a famous victory.

Harshit has shown that he is back to his best, but India will need a far stronger collective effort if they are to level the series. With the visitors trailing 0-1, the onus will once again be on the young pacer to lead the bowling attack as India look to avoid a series defeat in their first assignment as reigning T20 World Cup champions.
