A surgeon and content creator from Haryana’s Karnal has offered a reality check on the uneasy equation between a woman’s success and marriage prospects.
In a viral video, Dr Jasmine Kalsi recounted conversations around the proposals she received and questioned why some families view a woman’s visibility, independence and success as something that could make her less ‘suitable’ as a bride.

Jasmine said her parents have recently been looking for matches for her and described the process as following an “arranged marriage syllabus”. Families, she said, may like a profile, photographs and other details, only to start questioning whether a woman with a large social media following would fit into their family.
“Apparently, after getting lakhs of followers, the marriage material just disappears,” Jasmine said.
She then shared the kind of concerns her parents had encountered while looking for a suitable match. According to Jasmine, the underlying expectation is that a woman should not be too independent or successful if she wants to fit comfortably into a traditional marriage.
“If someone sees you on Instagram, and sees a girl like you who is independent and has this kind of lifestyle, then why would he want you?” she said, recounting her parents’ concerns.
Jasmine went on to describe the extreme version of this mindset, saying that some men may prefer a woman they can control or suppress.
“He’ll want someone he can keep completely under his control, someone he can suppress,” she said, adding, “There’s nothing left except a burqa or a ghoonghat. Or just keep the woman locked inside the house. Then no one will see her, and she won’t get ahead of you.”
The content creator also questioned the idea that a woman’s achievements could become a disadvantage when it comes to finding a partner. She ended the video with a pointed message for anyone who feels threatened by a successful woman.
“If you’re getting two lakh followers and two lakh problems, then congratulations, your decision is absolutely right, because you don’t have the capacity to cherish a girl like me,” Jasmine said.
The video has also made its way to X, where users discussed the contrasting expectations placed on women who become successful and visible in public spaces.
The reactions centred on the societal double standards around women’s independence, careers and marriage.
