Hayden Panettiere was twice taken from her Los Angeles home on a gurney during her relationship with Brian Hickerson, according to a former neighbor who has spoken about incidents she says she witnessed before the actress’ death at 36.
The Heroes and Nashville star died on August 16 after being found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina.
Authorities have said there were no signs of trauma or foul play, while her official cause and manner of death remain undetermined pending toxicology results.
Against that background, former neighbor Mia Terrazas has told Page Six she saw Hayden removed from her West Hollywood residence by emergency workers on July 29, 2023, and January 16, 2024.
Mia said Hayden appeared to have “bruises” and “bright red spots” during the incidents and added her ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson, 37, was present and “glued to” her on both occasions.
Mia’s daughter, Vileena Koneru, also told Page Six she also witnessed both incidents.
Mia said during the July 2023 incident she approached Hayden while she was on the gurney and asked whether she was alright.
According to Mia, Hayden replied she was.
Vileena said she and her mother raised their “concerns” with first responders when another incident occurred in January 2024.
Mia also claimed she repeatedly heard “muffled arguments” coming from Hayden’s home, describing them as “very hostile”.
She said: “You can tell somebody’s arguing just by the tonality.”
Mia claimed that on another occasion she heard Hayden screaming at Brian in an elevator: “Just leave me alone! Just stop!”
Brian had previously faced criminal proceedings stemming from allegations involving Hayden.
In 2021, he pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend and received a jail sentence and probation.
Hayden later wrote about their relationship and the abuse she experienced in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which was published in May.
Brian publicly addressed his past behavior in an interview with TMZ in May.
He said: “I got arrested for abusing her, and I wouldn’t blame her friends for being p***** off with me, so I don’t really have much to say on that.”
He added: “You never lay hands on a woman, bottom line.”
Discussing an incident Hayden described in her memoir, Brian said: “There’s a story where I was drunk, right? Hayden was standing across the room and I had a phone in my hand and I said, ‘Hayden, I’ll give you 10 seconds to run as fast as you can before I throw it at you’.”
He added: “Who wants to read something about themselves, right? But you gotta be vulnerable and I did it. I did it, so.”
Hayden’s memoir detailed her experiences with addiction, fame, relationships and her years working in Hollywood.
Her book became a New York Times and USA Today bestseller following its publication.
Hayden’s death three months later prompted tributes to a career that had begun in childhood and included Remember the Titans before she became internationally known as cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes.
She later played country singer Juliette Barnes in Nashville, a performance that earned her two Golden Globe nominations.
Charles Esten, who starred opposite Hayden as Deacon Claybourne in Nashville, paid tribute to his former co-star at the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday (22.08.26), dedicating his song Somewhere in the Sunshine to her.
Charles recalled meeting Hayden during his audition for the series and described his former colleague as a “bright, shining light”.
Hayden’s mother, Lesley Vogel, 70, has also spoken publicly since her daughter’s death, telling Good Morning America the pair had been estranged for periods amid disagreements over Hayden’s relationship with Brian.
Lesley said she wanted her daughter to be remembered for her beauty, intelligence and talent.
Hayden’s father, Skip Panettiere, announced her death in a family statement.
He said: “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden.”
Skip added: “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her – and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”
Greenville authorities said emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate Hayden before she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy found no signs of trauma, but the investigation remains open while officials await toxicology results, which the Greenville County Coroner’s Office has said could take several weeks.
Brian’s attorney has said: “Hayden’s death remains under investigation and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed. As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play.
“Out of respect for Hayden’s loved ones and the ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time.”
