Heavy rain lashed Chennai and several northern districts of Tamil Nadu, prompting authorities to declare a holiday for schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu on Wednesday, the Press Trust of India reported.

Chennai and neighbouring districts have received rain since Tuesday evening as the northeast monsoon remains active. The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast further downpours over the next 48 hours.

In its latest bulletin, the weather office said a low-pressure area was likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Tamil Nadu coast on Wednesday. A cyclonic circulation, which was earlier over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Tamil Nadu coast, is now over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Tamil Nadu coast.

Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the region within 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected at isolated places in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Ramanathapuram districts, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.

According to an official release cited by Press Trust of India, road repairs are under way across Greater Chennai Corporation areas at an estimated cost of Rs 21.80 crore, following the Chief Minister’s directions.

As part of precautions for the northeast monsoon, the corporation is carrying out repairs using concrete and tar mixtures in zones 1 to 15. It also distributed 6,000 food packets to rain-affected people in Virugambakkam on Wednesday morning.

With more heavy rain forecast, schools remain closed in four districts, while road repairs and relief measures continue across affected areas.
