A child’s repeated cries of “Help, help, kidnapper!” late on Tuesday sparked panic among passersby and triggered a police search in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district. Hours later, investigators discovered there had been no kidnapping at all.

The alarm was raised around 10 pm after people heard the child shouting for help while travelling on a motorcycle. Believing he was being abducted, they alerted the police.

Officers from Shahpur and Chiluatal police stations rushed to the spot. Multiple teams were deployed, CCTV footage was examined and people in the area were questioned as police began searching for the suspected kidnappers.

After tracing those involved, police found that the child had been staying at his maternal grandmother’s house for the past few days. On Tuesday night, his mother and maternal uncle were taking him back home on a motorcycle when he began shouting, “Help… Kidnapper!”

Police spoke separately to the child, his mother and his maternal uncle, and also videographed the inquiry.

The investigation found that the boy did not want to return home.

According to the police, the child wanted to continue staying with his grandmother and was reluctant to go back with his parents. He was also unwilling to return to his studies.

Investigators said the child deliberately shouted for help hoping passersby would gather and send him back to his grandmother’s house.

After examining CCTV footage and questioning those involved, police confirmed within about an hour that there had been no kidnapping or any other criminal act.

The incident ended without any criminal case, but not before the child’s cries had prompted a full-scale police response and left residents believing a kidnapping was underway.
