A high school football player in the US was shocked to find a venomous snake inside his helmet.
A student at Maumelle High in Arizona felt a strange movement in his headgear after warmups during practice, and asked an assistant coach to take a look at the equipment.
When the coach peaked inside, he found a two-foot cottonmouth snake behind the padding.
The viper apparently had to be encouraged out by police officers pouring water into the helmet.
Moments later, animal services technicians arrived at the scene and revealed the serpent was a deadly cottonmouth, which is the second-most venomous snakes in Arkansas.
Animal services director Chris Davis was amazed to discover the player had worn the helmet for almost an hour without being bitten.
He said: “It was unreal. You had to kind of be there and take pictures to say this was real.”
Largely unfazed, it’s said the student used a different helmet to finish the practice session.
Davis added: “One of the officers noticed that it, due to it being big and fat, may have recently ate a couple of days before.
“It probably was trying to find a dark spot to digest the food, and when it was coming across, it saw a helmet lying on the ground.”
After the near miss, the head coach for the team reminded the players to check their equipment before use.
