Bagpipes, Highland dancing and plenty of tartan will take over Perth this weekend as the country’s only kilted fun run returns.
About 20,000 people are expected to flock to Armadale’s Minnawarra and Memorial parks this Sunday to celebrate Scottish culture at WA’s largest Highland Gathering.
The free gathering has been held for more than three decades but the highly anticipated Perth Kilt Run was only added in 2013.
Kicking off the proceedings at 8.30am, competitors will run, walk or wheel their way around either a 2.5km course or the new 5km warrior course, with running shoes optional and kilts mandatory.
Dogs are welcome on the 2.5km course, which is also fully paved and wheelchair accessible.
The Perth Kilt Run is the only event of its kind in Australia, and part of the proceeds raised from registrations will support Breast Cancer Care WA, the Dog’s Refuge Home and the WA Disabled Sport Association.
While online registrations have closed, participants can try their luck to register the morning of the run between 7am and 8am. Kilts will be available for hire.

Once the runners have crossed the finish line, the Armadale Highland Gathering will properly begin.
Traditional Highland dancing, live medieval combat and Scottish dog breed demonstrations will entertain the crowds, soundtracked by award-winning pipe bands.
Market stalls, food and Scottish clan heritage displays will also feature.
One of the most exciting parts of the day is the Heavy Events display, where trained competitors will take on Cumberland wrestling, the caber toss, overhead heave and stones of strength.
Visitors can even test their strength against Armadale’s own Atlas Stones.
Mayor Ruth Butterfield said it was the largest Scottish-themed event in the State and had become an important part of the city’s history over the past 30 years.
“It brings together Scottish traditions, competition, music and community, and takes advantage of the amazing parkland in the Armadale city centre,” she said.
“Whether you have Scottish heritage, have been coming for years or have never experienced a Highland Gathering before, everyone is welcome to come along and be part of it.”
Volunteers and members of the Armadale Highland Gathering Committee dedicate their time and knowledge each year to ensure the day runs smoothly.
