For a mother who was preparing to celebrate her only son’s ninth birthday tomorrow, the joy of the occasion has turned into unbearable grief. The eight-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run in Mumbai’s Bandra West on Sunday, leaving his family devastated just a day before he was to turn nine.

“He was my only son. We got him here from Gorakhpur for studies. He was studying in an English-medium school,” said Poonam Gupta, the boy’s mother, while demanding strict action against the accused, Megha Rawal.

She said the family had been looking forward to celebrating his birthday on September 1. On Sunday, the boy had gone to Jijamata Garden on St John Baptist Road in Bandra West when he was run over by a speeding Toyota Innova Crysta.

According to the family, they were told that the driver was distracted while speaking on the phone when the accident occurred. The mother also alleged that the driver did not stop after the crash and instead tried to flee the spot.

“She should be hanged in front of me. I do not want anything else,” the grieving mother said while talking to India Today.

The accused, a 45-year-old nutritionist and gym trainer, was arrested by Mumbai Police following the accident. Eyewitnesses told police that she was driving at high speed and was distracted by a mobile phone call at the time of the crash.

Rawal was produced before a court, which remanded her to police custody for one day as the investigation into the accident continued.

Bandra Police have registered an FIR against her under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act, including charges related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving and dangerous driving.

As the investigation proceeds, the family is left mourning a child whose ninth birthday was meant to be a day of celebration. Instead, his mother is now seeking justice and strict action against the person accused of taking her only son’s life.
