The Prime Minister also recalled Patekar’s “frank and forthright views”, saying he never hesitated to express what he believed in. “Shri Nana Patekar’s contribution to Hindi and Marathi cinema was immense. His passing leaves a deep void,” the prime minister said, offering condolences to the actor’s family, friends and admirers.

Nana Patekar died at the age of 75 on Thursday. He was found unresponsive at his flat in Goa after experiencing severe chest pain. According to ANI, the actor died of cardiac arrest and was declared dead by the medical team at Manipal Hospital at 5.20 am.

Dr Shekhar Salkar, Chief of the Department of Oncology at Manipal Hospital, detailed the actor’s final hours during a press briefing. He said Patekar was brought to the hospital in an unresponsive state and could not be revived despite prolonged efforts.

“Nana Patekar was brought dead to the hospital. He came in around 4 or 4:30 am and was declared dead by around 5.30 am. We tried our best to save him, but he was brought dead. Cardiac massage was given for almost 45 minutes to an hour, but he just could not be saved,” Salkar said.

He said Patekar had called someone around 2.30 am and sent a message to a friend saying he was not feeling well. The friend later went to the actor’s house at around 4 am after seeing the message.

“By then, Nana was sweating and gradually becoming unconscious,” Salkar said. He added that the actor’s caretaker went to the hospital and brought an ambulance, following which the emergency team reached his residence and began cardiac massage.

Since Patekar was not a registered patient at the hospital, the medical team informed the police about his death as per procedure. His body was later taken to Goa Medical College for a post-mortem examination, after which it will be handed over to the family.

Nana Patekar made his Hindi film debut with Gaman in 1978 and went on to establish himself as one of Hindi cinema’s most distinctive and formidable actors, while also making a lasting mark in Marathi cinema.
