A “broad part of Eastern Australia” is expected to be slammed by a huge wet weather system carrying giant hail and destructive winds.

Large sections of southeast Queensland and northern NSW are set to cop a barrage of wild weather as a huge storm system passes overhead.

The westerly storm surge is currently moving directly over Queensland’s Wide Bay-Burnett region, with locals being warned of “giant hail and destructive winds” by the Bureau of Meteorology.

BOM Meteorologist Christie Johnson said the areas at “greatest risk” were inland parts of Queensland’s Southeast Coast District, the Eastern Downs and Granite Belt, southern and western parts of the Wide Bay-Burnett District, as well as the border ranges and far northeastern parts of NSW.

“These severe storms may produce damaging to destructive winds, large to giant hail, and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding,” Ms Johnson said.

“Anyone in the areas that could see thunderstorms today should be taking care if they’re out and about, watching the radar for thunderstorms, checking for warnings,” she said.

“Beware of flash flooding and never drive through floodwaters. As they say, if thunder roars, go indoors.”

A number of water catchments have come under flood watch, with moderate warnings for the Bulloo, Barcoo, and Lower Warrego rivers and minor warnings for the lower Paroo River.

Gold Coast Waters and the Byron Coast are also under marine wind warnings.
