Artificial intelligence is often accused of making people dependent on technology. But for one Hyderabad man, it did the opposite. In an X post, the man detailed how an AI assistant helped him and his son spend a weekend learning, experimenting and building a voice-controlled robotic arm from scratch.
The father recalled that the project began when his son returned home ahead of his school’s tech fair with an ambitious plan.

“Last week, he came home and said, ‘I want to build a robot,'” he wrote.
With only a few days to prepare, the duo decided that building a full-fledged robot would be difficult. Instead, they narrowed their focus to creating a voice-controlled robotic arm: a challenge that was both achievable and exciting.
They started by browsing YouTube for ideas before turning to AI assistant Claude to generate 3D designs for the arm. Once the designs were ready, the components were 3D printed at a shop in Hyderabad’s Tolichowki and delivered home via Rapido.
The next stop was Koti, where they picked up motors, chips, capacitors, resistors and wires needed to bring the project to life.
From there, Claude became more than just a design tool. According to the father, it helped write the code, troubleshoot technical glitches and suggest improvements along the way.
The pair continued refining the project using Claude Opus 5 and Fable, making small adjustments until the robotic arm performed as intended.
Only then did the assembly begin.
“And damn, it was fun,” he wrote, summing up what turned out to be far more than a school project.

Reflecting on the experience, the father said the weekend was filled with learning, experimentation and teamwork.
“What began as a school project became a beautiful experience of learning, building, failing, fixing and spending time together,” he wrote, adding that AI did not replace learning but encouraged them to attempt something they might never have considered otherwise.
