Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Police on Tuesday, October 27, launched a pilot Zonal Investigation Branch to handle complex and serious criminal cases registered across police stations.
The initiative marks a major reform in the policing system under the Hyderabad City Police Commissionerate, a press release said.
Currently, police station personnel handle both law and order duties and crime investigations. The constant demands of bandobust duties and routine law and order issues make it challenging for them to focus exclusively on investigating serious crimes at the field level, the release said.
Against this backdrop, the new branch has been established as a pilot project to separate law and order duties from crime investigation and ensure thorough, uninterrupted investigations into grave and other serious cases, it said.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar inaugurated the Zonal Investigation Branch at the Golconda Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) office premises.
The specialised team will focus exclusively on investigating serious cases registered within the zone. It comprises two Detective Inspectors, one Sub-Inspector, one head constable and 10 constables, the release said.
The team will coordinate with key government departments, including Health, the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the prosecution, to gather scientific evidence and prepare charge sheets meticulously within stipulated timeframes. This is expected to strengthen investigations and help ensure that cases are effectively presented in court, the release said.
By taking over complex investigations, the branch is expected to reduce the workload of local police stations, it said.
Sajjanar said the branch had been established to ensure that bandobust and routine policing duties did not affect the quality of crime investigations.
“Right from case registration to filing charge sheet in court, the team will focus entirely on case resolution,” he said.
The branch will support the Investigation Monitoring Cell, which was established earlier in the commissionerate, by continuously monitoring investigations into grave cases at the zonal level, he said.
With the new wing taking up serious investigations, police station personnel will be able to focus more effectively on maintaining law and order and preventing crime at the ground level, the release said.
Sajjanar added that similar branches would be established in all other zones under the commissionerate based on the outcome of the pilot project.
