Amid talk of AI and wars he said he had helped settle across the globe during his United Nations General Assembly speech in New York, US President Donald Trump turned to praise his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, for what he said was her role in securing the safe return of displaced Ukrainian and Russian children to their families.

Trump then paused, looked around and appeared to realise he could not spot Melania.
“Where is our first lady? Where is she? Can you imagine I can’t see the first lady?” he asked.
The camera then panned towards Melania, who broke into a smile. Members of the US delegation sitting near her pointed Trump in her direction, before she eventually waved. Trump finally spotted her and continued with his remarks.
After spotting Melania, Trump said, “Great job. This year she worked so hard. This year she also became the only First Lady to preside over the meeting of UN Security Council and she did it very well.”
Trump was pointing to Melania presiding over a United Nations Security Council meeting on children and education in conflict in March this year, two days after the US President and Israel launched strikes on Iran that led to a UN warning over child safety.
The meeting marked the first time the spouse of a serving world leader had chaired the 15-member Security Council, the UN body responsible for maintaining international peace and security. The plan for her to chair the session had been announced last week, before the U.S. and Israeli strikes.
The development came after the United States assumed the council’s monthly rotating presidency and also reflected how Trump has personalised US foreign policy by involving friends and family in major issues.
Melania Trump’s office said she wanted to highlight education as a means of promoting tolerance and world peace at the meeting, titled “Children, Technology, and Education in Conflict”.
In a statement to the council, she said, “The US stands with all of the children throughout the world. I hope soon peace will be yours.”
Iran has blamed Israel and the United States for a strike on a girls’ primary school in the southern Iranian town of Minab on Saturday. Iran’s UN envoy, Amir Saeid Iravani, said the strike killed 165 schoolgirls.
The meeting on children and education in conflict was held against the backdrop of the latest strikes on Iran, with Melania Trump chairing the session as the United States held the Security Council presidency and Iran accusing Israel and the US over the school attack in Minab.
