Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has compared Vedang Raina’s performance in Main Vaapas Aaunga to Alia Bhatt’s emotionally layered turn in Highway, saying the young actor reminded him of the actor during one of the most defining phases of her career.

Speaking to Filmfare about the emotional depth he looks for in performers, Ali said some newcomers unexpectedly bring a level of maturity that stands out on screen. Drawing a direct comparison between the two actors, he said, “Alia Bhatt in Highway or Vedang Raina in this film (Main Vaapas Aaunga) have portrayed certain depth of emotion. Some newcomers unexpectedly do that. There is a certain maturity that these people possess.”

The filmmaker’s remarks come as Main Vaapas Aaunga gears up for its theatrical release on June 12, with the spotlight now shifting towards Vedang Raina’s performance in the Partition-set drama.

Why Did Imtiaz Ali Compare Vedang Raina To Alia Bhatt?

Ali, who is known for extracting emotionally nuanced performances from actors, said he views performers through an individualistic lens rather than judging them by experience or seniority.

“I have an individualistic take on actors,” he said, adding that emotional intelligence matters more to him than the number of films an actor has done. “Actors are very individualistic. They never become veterans. They always remain the same,” he added.

The filmmaker suggested that emotional authenticity is what ultimately makes a performance memorable, regardless of whether the actor is new to the industry or well-established.

How Did Vedang Raina React To The Praise?

At the trailer launch event of Main Vaapas Aaunga, Vedang Raina reacted to being called the youngest hero in Imtiaz Ali’s world and described it as one of the biggest moments of his career so far.

“It makes me feel young and also very, very honoured,” Raina said. “To be part of an Imtiaz Ali film, even at the age of whatever, would have been a privilege.”

He also thanked the filmmaker for the opportunity, saying it was “the most amazing thing” to happen to him this early in his journey in cinema.

What Is Main Vaapas Aaunga About?

Main Vaapas Aaunga stars Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari Wagh and Vedang Raina in leading roles. Set against the backdrop of Partition, the film is described as a story of love, separation and longing.

The film is produced by Sameer Nair and Deepak Segal along with Mohit Choudhary and Shibasish Sarkar of Window Seat Films. It is scheduled to release in cinemas on June 12.
