The funeral of boxing champion and renowned coach and mentor Tony Mundine OAM will take place at 10.30am on Saturday morning at Redfern Oval.
Mr Mundine, a Bundjalung man, was a boxing champion in his own right, recording 80 wins, 15 losses and one draw throughout a stellar boxing career, but is best known as the coach, father and mentor of boxing legend and NRL star Anthony Mundine.
Mr Mundine passed away aged 75 on August 30.
On Saturday morning, Anthony posted a video on his Instagram stories inviting members of the public to come down to Redfern Oval and help celebrate his father.
“We’re going to have a service for Dad today, to send the brother off. There’s going to be speakers. Pay your respects to this great man, he deserves it, he was such a champion,” he said.
On Friday, Mundine said he wanted to “send the brother off the best way we can,” with “peace and love”.
Tony grew up in a small Indigenous community called Baryulgil, which rests on the Clarence River between the towns of Tenterfield, Grafton and Casino in Northern NSW.
From there, he moved to Sydney and developed his boxing career into one of the greatest in the country’s history, going on to challenge Carlos Monzon for the middleweight world title in Argentina in 1974.
Later in life, he became a key mentor for his son Anthony, who would go on to hold the middleweight world title for boxing twice between 2003 and 2008.
