President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday described the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with a nation “harbouring terrorism” as a decisive step in the national interest, particularly for farmers, as she addressed the nation on the eve of the 80th Independence Day.
The President also warned that terrorists and those supporting them would have to face consequences “no matter where they hide” and said Operation Sindoor demonstrated the Indian Armed Forces’ ability to carry out precision strikes against terror networks.

“The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with a country harbouring terrorism was a decisive step in the national interest, particularly for our farmers,” Murmu said.
Her remarks came as she outlined India’s response to terrorism and the measures taken in the wake of terror attacks.
‘TERRORISTS WILL HAVE TO FACE CONSEQUENCES’
Speaking about India’s approach to terrorism, Murmu said those involved in terror activities or supporting them could not expect to escape accountability.
“Terrorists and those supporting them will have to face consequences no matter where they hide,” she said.
Referring to Operation Sindoor, the President said the military operation had demonstrated the capabilities of India’s armed forces in targeting terror networks with precision.
“Operation Sindoor demonstrated Indian Armed Forces’ capability for precision strikes against terror networks,” President Murmu said.
INDUS WATERS TREATY SUSPENSION
President Murmu described the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty as a decisive move in India’s national interest and specifically linked it to the interests of farmers.
The treaty governs the sharing of waters of the Indus river system between India and Pakistan. India suspended the treaty following the Pahalgam terror attack, amid a broader set of measures against Pakistan.
The President’s remarks come amid heightened focus on India’s response to cross-border terrorism and the use of diplomatic and strategic measures to protect national interests.
INDIA’S NAXAL-FREE PUSH
President Murmu also described the progress towards making India Naxal-free as a major national achievement.
She referred to rapid development and greater cultural participation in Bastar, pointing to changes in a region that has long been affected by Left-wing extremism.
ECONOMY GROWING DESPITE GLOBAL INSTABILITY
The President said India’s economy is projected to grow at more than twice the average global growth rate despite warfare, instability and uncertainty across the world.
She also pointed to the impact of inclusive development initiatives, saying more than 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty over the past decade.
Murmu also referred to the government’s free ration programme, saying it is ensuring food security for more than 80 crore beneficiaries.
‘NO ONE SHOULD BE DEPRIVED OF JUSTICE’
Access to justice also featured in the President’s address, with Murmu stressing the responsibility of the judicial system towards those who may lack financial resources.
She said it is the duty of every person associated with the judicial system to ensure that no one is deprived of justice due to a lack of resources.
The President’s Independence Day eve address touched on national security, terrorism, India’s response to Pakistan, economic growth, poverty reduction, food security, development in Naxal-affected areas and access to justice.
