The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini sailed into New York Port on July 4 to represent India at the United States International Naval Review 250 and Sail 4th 250 celebrations, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. The ship entered the port past the Statue of Liberty and joined naval vessels from the US and other countries for the maritime celebrations.
During the Parade of Sail along the Hudson River, the iconic three-masted barque flew the Indian Tricolour, showcasing India’s rich maritime heritage and centuries-old seafaring traditions. The Indian Navy said the ship’s participation reflected the enduring friendship, mutual respect and expanding maritime partnership between India and the United States.
The visit forms part of INS Sudarshini’s 10-month transoceanic expedition, Lokayan 2026, which aims to strengthen maritime cooperation, build international goodwill and deepen engagement with partner navies. Before arriving in New York, the ship participated in Sail 250 events at Norfolk, Virginia, from June 19 to 23 and later reached Baltimore, Maryland, on June 26. It is now berthed at Brooklyn for the Sail 4th 250 celebrations.
The Freedom250 official website described the International Naval Review and Sail 4th 250 as a “historic, once-in-a-lifetime gathering of the largest fleet of US and international ships and aircraft in honour of America’s 250th birthday”. According to the website, the International Naval Review showcases America’s maritime strength, global leadership and partnerships through the US Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.
The website also said the celebrations feature the largest-ever flotilla of tall ships from around the world, with vessels from more than 20 nations participating in events in New York Harbour from July 4 to 8. The maritime display also includes an air show, with US jets leaving red, white and blue trails across the sky.
The Indian Navy said the port call represents more than a journey across the Atlantic. Set against the New York skyline, INS Sudarshini continues to carry forward India’s seafaring traditions while promoting friendship, cooperation and stronger maritime ties between India and the United States.
