Officials of West Bengal’s Siliguri Municipal Corporation have sealed a prominent sweet manufacturing unit after a raid exposed serious hygiene lapses and contaminated raw materials.
The action was taken following instructions issued after a meeting with the state’s Chief Minister and Health Minister. Under the leadership of Commissioner Bir Bikram Rai, civic officials conducted raids at several locations across the city.

During a raid at the branded sweet factory on Sevoke Road, officials collected samples of various sweets for examination. An inspection of the raw materials allegedly found insects and dead flies in ingredients, including ghee and besan.
Officials also found a drain running through the middle of the factory, with a foul odour spreading across the premises.
Following the inspection, the Commissioner ordered the immediate sealing of the factory.
The incident has raised concerns over food quality and public health. The municipal corporation has stepped up monitoring of sweet shops and food manufacturing units across Siliguri to ensure compliance with hygiene and cleanliness standards.
