Fresh from receiving the Padma Bhushan, playback singer Alka Yagnik is once again in the spotlight. While the honour celebrates her contribution to Indian music, it has also sparked interest in the life she has built over a career spanning more than four decades – one marked by chart-topping songs, steady success and a portfolio of high-value assets.
President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Padma Bhushan earlier this week. Shortly after receiving the honour, the singer shared a note on social media, reflecting on her journey and opening up about the health challenges that had kept her away from public appearances in recent years.
Yagnik began her playback singing career in 1983 and went on to become one of the most recognisable voices in Indian cinema. Over the years, she has recorded more than 8,000 songs across films and albums in multiple Indian languages.
According to Sovrenn, Yagnik’s estimated net worth stands between Rs 45 crore and Rs 50 crore, making her one of the wealthiest female playback singers in the country. A report by Siasat stated that she reportedly charged around Rs 12 lakh per song at the peak of her career. Most recently, she lent her voice to the track Udd Ja Kaale in the film Gadar 2.
Apart from playback singing, Yagnik also appeared as a judge on several singing reality shows over the years, adding another stream of income to her career. Amar Ujala reported that she also earned through brand endorsements and advertising campaigns.
The singer has made notable investments in real estate as well. According to a report by The Indian Express, Yagnik and her daughter, Syesha Kapoor, purchased an apartment in Mumbai’s Andheri West for Rs 11.5 crore in April this year. The 2,297-square-foot property is located in Oberoi Sky Heights, the same residential tower where Yagnik already owns a home. The transaction was registered on April 15 and attracted a stamp duty payment of Rs 57.5 lakh. Reports have also suggested that she has invested in stocks and other real-estate assets.
Her taste for luxury extends to her garage as well. According to Car Blog India, Yagnik owns a Mercedes-Benz GLE luxury SUV. The top-spec version of the vehicle is priced at around Rs 1.64 crore (ex-showroom) in India. She is also reported to own a Range Rover SUV.
Playback singer Alka Yagnik, 60, was conferred the Padma Bhushan by President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on June 23. The singer, who revealed in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss, reflected on her health journey in an Instagram post a day later. Sharing that she had largely remained away from the public eye and avoided appearances over the past two years, Yagnik said she chose to attend the ceremony as she is gradually “finding her way back”.
