Forget the usual image of a college hostel with a few floors, a common room and a laundry area. At the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, US, an entire dormitory complex is home to thousands of students preparing to become Navy and Marine Corps officers.
Bancroft Hall, known to midshipmen as ‘Mother B’, is considered the largest single college dormitory in the world. The US Naval Academy says it has 1,639 dorm rooms, 4,663 beds, 33 acres of floor space and 4.8 miles of corridors, called “passageways”.

Business Insider, in a September 2026 report, additionally described the complex as spanning about 1.4 million square feet.
And there is another unusual detail: Bancroft Hall has its very own ZIP code, 21412, used for midshipmen’s mail.
A DORM THAT GREW WITH THE ACADEMY
Bancroft Hall did not appear in its current form overnight.
Architect Ernest Flagg designed the original complex as part of his larger plan for the Naval Academy. Construction of the centre section and two wings began in 1906 and was completed in 1908.
The complex expanded again with two more wings between 1918 and 1921, followed by further additions in 1941 and 1961. The final version has eight wings.
The building is named after George Bancroft, the former Secretary of the Navy who founded the Naval Academy.
THOUSANDS OF MIDSHIPMEN, ONE HOME
The Academy says all midshipmen live in Bancroft Hall. Its admissions material says students live close to around 150 other midshipmen in their company, with companies forming an important part of life at the Academy.
That makes the building more than a place to sleep. Companies live, eat, study and train together, building the group structure that shapes much of daily life at the Academy.
The complex also contains a remarkable range of facilities. The Academy’s 2025 Bancroft Hall handbook lists medical and dental services, a gym, post office, retail stores, textbook store, laundromats, uniform store, barber and beauty shop, cobbler shop and dining facilities, among others.
EVEN MEALS HAPPEN ON A MASSIVE SCALE
King Hall, the dining facility within the complex, was completed in 1953.
The Naval Academy says it can serve 4,500 meals at one sitting in less than 10 minutes, with around 13,500 meals served each day.
The complex also includes Mitscher Hall, which contains an auditorium and chapel facilities. The Uriah P Levy Center includes a synagogue, conference rooms and the midshipmen-run Honor Court.
LIFE INSIDE HAS ITS OWN RULES
Bancroft Hall is also where the Academy’s military discipline becomes part of everyday student life.
Current Naval Academy regulations restrict which doors and passageways midshipmen from different class years can use. Freshmen, known as plebes, face the strictest restrictions and cannot use the centre doors except for ceremonial duties.
The result is a college dorm unlike most others. Bancroft Hall is part residence, part dining complex, part service centre and, in many ways, part training ground.
Its sheer size makes it extraordinary. But what makes it different is that thousands of students do not simply live inside it. They spend four years learning how to function as part of a tightly organised military community.
