Instagram is looking to break down language barriers on its platform. The social media company has added a range of new features to its short-video editing app Edits, including support for bilingual captions, which automatically translate captions into a secondary language. The update removes the need to switch between apps for translation, as Meta continues to consolidate features in one place.

Through a post on Threads, the app that rivals X, Instagram announced that the feature is currently available in 15 languages, including English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Indonesian, Russian, Bengali, Gujarati, and Kannada.
Apart from the bilingual captions feature, users can also build richer templates with support for overlays and the ability to lock specific clips. The update also throws in more summer-related sound effects with a feature called “Seasonal Sound Effects”.
Meta stepped into the video editing space, launching Edits in January last year. Since then, the reel landscape on the platform has shifted quite a bit. The app lets users record, perform single-frame-precision editing, and export crisp 4K, watermark-free videos of up to 10 minutes, all for free.
Last month at an event in Los Angeles, Meta took things a little further. The company announced a set of upcoming additions to the app, which include a new AI assistant and a long-awaited desktop version. It will take the mobile-only origin app to computers as well.
As for the AI assistant, it will analyse performance data from Instagram. Data on audience retention or data that explains why certain videos perform well and why certain did not. The AI assistant can also suggest fresh content ideas, recommend trending audio and guide users based on their previous posts.
Instagram has also confirmed that a desktop version of Edits is in the works. The upcoming release will let creators work on larger screens with more precise control over the editing process, and projects will sync between mobile and desktop, making it easy to pick up where you left off. The move should help Edits go toe-to-toe with established rivals like CapCut, which has offered a desktop version for some time now.
