If you’re planning to upgrade your iPhone, it may be worth waiting for Apple’s next generation of devices. The iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to arrive in September 2026 and, if the rumours are anything to go by, the new flagship iPhones could bring some significant upgrades, including an improved camera system, a faster A20 Pro chip, a smaller Dynamic Island and a bigger battery.

There are also rumours that Apple may launch the Pro models alongside its first foldable iPhone, while pushing the standard iPhone 18 models to 2027.
So, what’s coming, and will the iPhone 18 Pro be worth the wait? It’s still too early to say for certain, but based on current rumours, analyst reports and supply-chain leaks, here are the five biggest upgrades currently tipped for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
1. New upgraded camera system
The camera is shaping up to be the biggest talking point around the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. According to multiple reports, Apple may finally introduce a variable aperture system on the main rear camera. Unlike the fixed aperture found on current iPhones, a variable aperture can physically adjust how much light enters the sensor.
In simple terms, this would allow the camera to adapt better to different lighting conditions. It could improve low-light photography, create more natural-looking background blur in portraits and offer greater control over exposure when recording videos.
Reports also suggest Apple may introduce a new three-layer stacked image sensor supplied by Samsung. The upgraded sensor is expected to improve dynamic range, reduce image noise and speed up image processing. Meanwhile, the telephoto camera could get a wider aperture, potentially delivering better zoom shots in low-light conditions.
Some leaks additionally claim Apple may retain the triple 48-megapixel rear camera setup, with the biggest changes focused on image quality rather than megapixel numbers. The front-facing camera on the Pro Max is also rumoured to receive an upgrade to 24 megapixels, which could lead to sharper selfies and improved video calls.
2. A20 Pro chip may bring a huge performance leap
The second major upgrade is expected to come from Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chipset. According to reports, the chip could be built using TSMC’s advanced 2nm manufacturing process, making it one of the most powerful smartphone processors ever created.
Leaks suggest the new chip may deliver up to 15 per cent better performance and nearly 30 per cent greater power efficiency compared to the previous generation. That could translate into faster app performance, smoother gaming, better AI capabilities and improved battery life.
Analyst Jeff Pu has also suggested the iPhone 18 Pro series may ship with 12GB of RAM, up from the memory found in current models. Reports further indicate Apple may adopt a new packaging technology that places memory closer to the processor, helping improve speed and multitasking performance.
3. Bigger battery, longer battery life
Apple may also improve the battery. According to reports, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could pack a battery between 5,100mAh and 5,200mAh, making it one of the largest batteries ever used in an iPhone. Some leaks also suggest Apple may slightly increase the thickness of the Pro Max to accommodate the larger battery.
While battery capacity numbers do not always tell the full story, the combination of a larger battery and a more efficient A20 Pro chip could result in noticeable gains in day-to-day battery life.
4. Smaller Dynamic Island and a cleaner display
Apple is also expected to refine the front of the iPhone. Reports suggest the company may reduce the size of the Dynamic Island, giving users slightly more usable screen space.
Tipster Ice Universe has claimed the cut-out could become roughly 35 per cent narrower than the current version. While earlier rumours pointed towards under-display Face ID technology, more recent reports suggest Apple may not be ready to introduce that feature just yet.
Display sizes are expected to remain unchanged at 6.3 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. However, newer LTPO+ OLED panels could improve power efficiency, brightness and overall display quality.
5. Better connectivity and new colours
Another big upgrade may come in the form of connectivity improvements. Reports suggest Apple is preparing its next-generation C2 modem for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. The modem is expected to deliver faster 5G performance, better power efficiency and improved mmWave support.
Apple is also said to be exploring broader satellite communication capabilities beyond emergency services. While details remain limited, some reports suggest future iPhones could eventually support more advanced satellite-based communication features.
Special colour
While major design changes are not expected this year, Apple could still give the iPhone 18 Pro lineup a fresh look with new colour options. According to recent leaks, a new Dark Cherry finish may become the signature shade of the iPhone 18 Pro series. The colour is said to feature a deep wine-red tone and could replace the standout colours Apple has introduced on recent Pro models.
Reports also point to additional colour options, including Silver, Dark Grey and Light Blue. If the leaks are accurate, Apple may once again use exclusive finishes to help distinguish the new Pro models from previous generations.
Of course, all of these details are based on leaks, analyst reports and supply-chain information, and Apple has not officially confirmed anything yet. But if the rumours prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro series could deliver meaningful upgrades across cameras, performance, battery life, display technology and connectivity, even if it doesn’t bring a dramatic redesign.
