The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has successfully completed a series of critical separation tests for the Gaganyaan spacecraft, validating a key system needed to bring India closer to its first human spaceflight mission.

The tests evaluated the separation of the Crew Module (CM) from the Service Module (SM), two major components of Gaganyaan’s Orbital Module. The system is designed to separate the crew module from the service module before the spacecraft re-enters Earth’s atmosphere.

The successful tests provide confidence in the separation system ahead of Gaganyaan’s first uncrewed mission, G1, which Isro is targeting for launch in 2026.

WHY THE CREW MODULE SEPARATION TEST MATTERS

The crew and service modules are connected before launch and function as a single integrated unit during the ascent and orbital phase of the mission. Electrical and fluid services between the two modules are maintained through umbilical connections.

Before the crew module begins its return journey to Earth, it must separate from the service module through a carefully timed sequence of operations. The process involves multiple separation events, pyrotechnic devices and jettisoning mechanisms.

A failure during this critical phase could jeopardise the crew module’s return. Isro therefore conducted tests to validate the overall design and ensure that the separation process works as intended.

The test setup was established at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram. It replicated the integrated crew-service module assembly and used extensive instrumentation to monitor the separation sequence, including the severing of multiple umbilical connections.

CRITICAL SYSTEMS PUT TO THE TEST

Beyond validating the separation mechanism, the tests demonstrated the robustness and shock-survivability of several critical crew module systems.

These included avionics, inertial navigation systems, the thermal protection system in the aft and conical heat shields, and the deployable umbilical shield. Pyrotechnic devices associated with the crew module’s uprighting system and the thermal and humidity control system were also evaluated.

The results are important because the separation process can expose onboard hardware to mechanical shocks that must not compromise the spacecraft’s ability to navigate, protect itself during re-entry and support the crew.

Gaganyaan is India’s human spaceflight programme, designed to demonstrate the country’s ability to send astronauts into low Earth orbit and return them safely.

The upcoming uncrewed missions will help Isro validate spacecraft systems and safety procedures before attempting a crewed flight.
