A man expecting a quiet drink before dinner was given a celebrity encounter to remember after Jack Black sat beside him at a Seattle hotel bar.
The stranger had no idea who was sitting next to him when the pair began chatting during a work trip on Valentine’s Day around 20 years ago.
Sharing the story on Reddit, he said they talked for roughly half an hour before Black had to leave, but the actor had an unexpected surprise up his sleeve.
The man wrote: “[Jack Black] sat down next to me (had no idea who he was) and we struck up a conversation. Chatter for half an hour or so and he had to go. He picked up my tab as he left.
“The bartender said: ‘Making friends with Jack Black, that’s pretty cool!’ I was clueless. He had to explain who he was to me.”
The man said Black was “super cool” and did not behave like someone famous or “full of himself”.
He added: “Just a normal dude. Turns out he had a Tenacious D concert in town that night.”
Black, 57, has become one of Hollywood’s most recognisable comic actors, appearing in films including School of Rock, where he played substitute teacher Dewey Finn, back in 2003, while his band Tenacious D made waves in 2001 with their self-titled debut, featuring tracks like Tribute and Wonderboy.
He has also voiced Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and played Claptrap in the live-action Borderlands adaptation.
More recently, Black starred as Steve in the live-action Minecraft movie.
But the actor’s encounter with the mystery drinker showed a quieter side to his larger-than-life persona.
Rather than revealing his identity and leaving the stranger star-struck, Black simply enjoyed a conversation with him before picking up the tab,
