Jai Arrow may be about to be thrown “the world’s biggest birthday party”, but nothing will top the early present he has received.

Arrow, who retired from the NRL in May after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease, on Sunday married partner Berina Colakovic, at an intimate ceremony in Sydney. The pair have since posted images of the “elopement” attended by daughter Ayla Rosa, to their social media accounts.

The pair tied the knot after getting engaged in Italy in 2024.

“We did a thing 💍!” Berina posted on Instagram. “Don’t know how Italy will top this one but we can’t wait to celebrate with all our family and friends 🫶.

“An extra special thank you to our family friends The Beath’s for witnessing our special day and watching our little angel.

“I am in awe of how amazing people are thank you to Maddi, Lucy, Jazz, and everyone who gave their time to make this elopement a very extra special one.”

The couple both appeared to wear Australian brands for the occasion, tagging Rachel Gilbert Bridal and M.J. Bale in their Instagram announcement. The bride is believed to have chosen the $1200 ‘Sergio Sleeve Mini’, which the designer describes as a blazer-style dress with a defined silhouette. Colakovic paired the frock with floral patterned tights.

Several friends, including those from the rugby league community, posted their congratulations on social media.

The Rabbitohs and the NRL have planned a series of events to support Arrow’s battle with motor neurone disease throughout July, with the centrepiece being celebrations for his 31st birthday on Sunday.

Accor Stadium will be the venue as it doubles for South Sydney’s round 19 clash against Newcastle.

Promotions include a chance to bring two children to the game for free, a half-time performance from The Wiggles, an invitation to come onto the field at full-time and to be part of a world record attempt for the most party hats. The proceeds will go towards assisting Arrow and his family.

In a show of support, the majority of try-scorers in round 18 performed a bow-and-arrow celebration to acknowledge the former Maroons star.
