A man who broke into Kalgoorlie Veterinary Clinic and stole more than $950 worth of medication has been made to pay the vet back.
Jason Ephraim Ezekiel, 45, appeared in Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on Monday charged with burglary and commit, stealing, and possession of cannabis.
Prosecuting Sgt Ian Southall said the vet clinic was closed and no staff were present when Ezekiel approached it at 6.30am on Sunday March 1.
Ezekiel leant a chair against a window and broke the glass with a rock.
Inside, he forced open multiple cabinets and stole drugs to the value of $955.30.
He was later arrested and told police “I am innocent”.
In the following week he was found with less than 1g of cannabis.
Ezekiel, who self-represented, told the court he had a seizure on the morning of the offence and had no memory of it.
He said he made a “severe, grave mistake”.
Magistrate William Yoo ordered Ezekiel undergo a six-month community-based order and pay the vet $955.30 in reparations.
“Regional businesses can’t afford that kind of loss,” he said.
He also gave Ezekiel a $100 fine but suspended it for 14 days.
