Jason Sudeikis feels he “could have communicated better” with his former fiancée Olivia Wilde.
The Ted Lasso star was in a relationship with The Invite filmmaker from 2011 to 2020 and expressed regret at not expressing his thoughts and feelings more clearly to his former partner, with whom he has son Otis, 12, and daughter Daisy, 10.
Jason told the Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso podcast: “I think it’s just flat-out communication. I could have communicated better with how I felt, how things were making me feel (and) how things make me feel.”
The 51-year-old star added: “If I’m feeling a certain way and I don’t talk about it, that doesn’t make it go away.”
Sudeikis explained that it was “unfair” to assume that the other person in a relationship could be a “mind reader”.
He said: “Whether that person be a partner or a boss at SNL or a line producer for a television show.
“It’s, like, ‘How do you convey those ideas quicker?'”
Jason confessed that it took some time to comprehend his anguish after his relationship with Olivia came to an end.
The comedian said: “It’s the old equation of heartbreak, or any variation of it, takes half as long as the process itself… to get over something, so if it were a 10-year relationship, five years would be 20/20.”
Jason also waxed lyrical about his ex-partner and says that the Don’t Worry Darling filmmaker is “very good” at her job.
The former Saturday Night Live star said: “I’m thrilled for her, and I feel very fortunate doing what I’m supposed to be doing.
“But going through all that has allowed me to see when other folks are going through something similar.”
Jason revealed earlier this year that he is currently single and finds the idea of dating “daunting and overwhelming” as he and Olivia co-parent their children together.
He told the Friends Keep Secrets podcast: “I like being in relation to people.
“I’m not at a point in my life where, you know, where it feels good or fulfilling to date numerous people all at once. Yeah, that feels daunting and overwhelming, especially with being a parent.”
Sudeikis knows any potential new partner will always come second to his children.
He said: “There’s also a new thing of anybody I’m dating that they are never number one on the call sheet, as the showbiz saying would go, like the kids are.
“Even probably more so than myself. And so then there’s that little bit as you get older, you’re like, ‘Oh God, I got to make sure my cup’s full in order for other people to get the overflow.'”
