Two Jetstar passengers who boarded a plane in Melbourne have allegedly been caught with $2m of cocaine at a Bali airport.

The Bali-Nusra Regional Customs Office reported authorities allegedly found 4.5kg of cocaine hidden inside backpacks at Denpasar International Airport on October 3.

The cocaine was allegedly smuggled by two Chilean nationals who boarded a Jetstar flight at Melbourne after travelling from Santiago.

A Jetstar spokesman said they were aware of reports of an arrest by Indonesian authorities at Denpasar Airport and would co-operate with any requests from authorities.

X-rays allegedly revealed four plastic bags containing a white powder believed to be cocaine.

A Bali Provincial National Narcotics Agency spokesman alleged a Chilean woman, 23, and man, 31, were both carrying the drugs.

The pair allegedly told authorities they had gone to Bali for a holiday.

Police arrested another Indonesian man, 27, with the initials HU, who allegedly acted as the recipient of the drugs at a Kuta hotel.

Police claim he was acting on instructions from another person suspected of being involved in a wider drug distribution network.

Bali Provincial National Narcotics Agency Senior Commissioner Stevy Fritts Pattiassina said the case demonstrated their commitment to protecting the public from the threat of illicit drug trafficking.

“Bali, as an international tourist destination, is not immune to being targeted by international drug trafficking networks,” he said.

“Together with relevant agencies, we will continue to work in co-operation to protect the Island of the Gods, Bali, from illicit drug trafficking.”
